Location: How To -> Take Your Pension
If you have a deferred pension and are over age 50 (over age 55 with effect from 5 April 2010), you can put your pension into payment at any time. All you have to do is to contact the Pensions Administration Team giving details of your name, National Insurance Number or Member Number, your current address if you think it is different from that held on our records and the date when you are thinking of taking payment from.
If you are still contributing to the GEC Plan you may also be able to take payment of your benefits but you will need to speak to your HR department for further information.
Once we are in receipt of your request we will write to you with details of all of the different options available including how much your monthly pension would be, how much you could take as a cash lump sum payment, the benefits payable in the event of your death etc. We will also include a number of forms which you will need to complete, sign and return to us including one requesting details of the bank account which you want us to make payment to. This can all look a bit daunting but we are always happy to talk through each form with you and give you as much help as possible to get through them. We will also need to see a copy of your birth certificate if we didn't see a copy of it when you joined the Plan and your spouse's birth and marriage certificates if you are married.
Once we have received all of the forms we will then put the benefits which you have chosen into payment and write and tell you what we have done.
All of this normally takes about 6 to 8 weeks from start to finish (although it can take a bit longer if you have Additional Voluntary Contributions) so the more notice you can give us the better.
If you are only thinking about taking your pension but aren't sure yet, then you can ask us for a quotation of what your benefits would be at a certain date and we will send the information to you but without all of the forms. You can then let us know if you decide to take it any further and we would then issue all the necessary documents for you to complete.
